Trouble with the note system
Posted on: 03/14/12 11:15PM

I'm going on a translation binge. I have, however, encountered a huge (like, Reaper-sized) problem:

I form a Note, stretch it out over the block of text I have translated, copy-paste my translated bit, hit Save... and, when I hold the mouse over the block, it's an empty block/textzone. I hit "Refresh", and the note/block is still wordless and empty.

So I try to post my translation in the Comments. I put it in, hit the button... and the Comment doesn't show up. Type in. Hit "post" (or whatever), page reloads like it should when a new post is added... BUT THERE IS NO POST.

What the fucking hell is going on here?

Also, before this problem set in, whenever I successfully translated something and then tried to change "translation_request" to "translated", I got some funky error page and no change amonst the tags.

I'm just going to ask the question I usually do in these situations but...

do you have noscript? Because that shit is totally what happens when if you forget to allow Gelbooru on it.

That or your browser is blocking scripts against your will.

Normal users are limited to one tag and/or note edit every 30 seconds. If you've performed a tag or note edit in the last 30 seconds and try to perform another one, you will either get an error for a tag edit, or the note will not apply for notes.

This is not an error. It is intentional, to prevent people from using automatic processes to perform tag edits or, for example, insert a bunch of ads into our images as notes. People have done this in the past, so we had to put in a time limit for user actions to prevent abuse.

Some bots went through and tried to add a bunch of html to the tags in thousands of images. This was an absolute mess to clean up. We do not want it to happen again.

I click on a page with untranslated script, and leave it open as I click back and forth between it, a translation site, and a Word Document. It takes anywhere from 30 seconds to five minutes to translate something. And then I create Note, position it, copy-paste the translated words from the Document, and... well, you know the rest.

In other words, it's WAAAAAY more than 30 seconds between posts/edits.

And you didn't address the problem with posting a Reply/Comment.

And I was having no trouble with note-making and comment-posting earlier. I've been doing this translation binge for a couple days. The troubles only started a few hours ago.

Which web browser are you using? Are there any extensions installed into it that may affect the way that javascript functions?

Internet Explorer 7.

...

Again, the above-mentioned stuff was working perfectly for the last few days, and earlier this afternoon. It was only around a few hours ago that things went bad. Unless you guys made some major upgrade at that time earlier today, I don't see how my browser could be causing this.

I'm guessing you haven't downloaded any new toolbars or add-ons to IE lately?

Gelbooru has done some extensive overhalls... but not in a way that would only just now effect you. (So I think)

There's always the old clear IE's cache plan.

Nevertheless, you may try tagging or note editing on another browser just to see if you can. That'd tell you if it was IE's fault or Gelbooru's somewhat.

It probably wouldn't be a scripting problem like I said earlier, since you probably wouldn't be able to make forum posts either.

Edit: I noticed the fact that the intermission ads have added a new script called "animebw" that was not there before. I don't think that's the problem but you never know.

I don't think any sort of changes have been made to the site's code in the past few hours. I know the only person capable of making them has been away from his computer for a while now.

It's really difficult to diagnose anything based on the notes if it isn't happening because of the 30-second cooldown on tag edits, so if you're still experiencing the problem, could you be more specific about the error you get when trying to edit tags?

AnimeBW is another site that is operated by lozertuser.

For some reason having it blocked disabled the stream videos. And it only just now appeared.

I really don't think that's normal.

That's irrelevant to OP's problem though

@AG: Just posted a trans-note on a Danbooru pic. No problems whatsoever. Therefore, it's likely a problem with Gelbooru.

@ Jerl: I'll try to be more thorough in explanation, but I'm not sure I can. Here goes:

I open a Gelbooru picture that is in need of translation. I go to my other Browser Tab featuring a (very handy and accurate) translation site (Denshi Jisho). I have a Word Document ready in which I gradually translate the Japanese text in the Gelbooru pic (still open in a tab). After it's done, I click "Add Note". I position the note over the text. I cut-paste the translation from my open Word Document and into the open Note. I click Save. When I hover my clicker over the completed note (AFTER the "Note Saved" in the upper-left corner of the screen), the textbox is completely empty, despite my just filling it seconds earlier. Clicking to edit the post opens the type-in-able (argh, Buffy Speak!) text box, revealing that the text is still there. Trying to save that makes no difference; the hover-over is still blank. And if I refresh the page, not only is the box still blank but now the type-in-able bit is also empty/blank, as if I'd never copy-pasted the text at all.

As for the Comments: I click "Add Comment". I copy-paste the text into the file. I click the button to post the comment. The page reloads as it does whenever a comment is added... but my comment is not there (in fact, if before my comment it said "0 Comments", after I click to post it STILL says "0 Comments").

And again, all this only started a few hours ago; it was working fine the last few days.
