Why a link from favorites will not open in a new tab by ctrl click, as it must be?

Try clicking with just your mouse wheel. (Press your mouse wheel down when hovering over the image.)

It's because for some reason, we're using JavaScript to redirect the browser to the page instead of just a regular old hyperlink. I have no idea why.

Middle-clicking(ie with the wheel) never worked quite right when opening images from our faves. It opens the correct page, but..not in a new tab like it's supposed to. So I have to always right-click and manually do it that way. Is that intentional?

Middleclicking works as expected for me
Firefox 45 x64, abp/flashblock active
opens middle-clicked favorites in a new background tab.

Middle-clicking worked on Google Chrome v120 with Ublock Origin active.
