I'm not completely familiar with how we process uploads, but there are two possible ways it goes. Either,

1. The extension given to the file on our site matches the extension the file had when uploaded;

or

2. The upload process normalize all JPEG images to use the .jpeg extension. Any posts you see with a .jpg extension didn't go through the normal upload process (i.e. they were imported from Danbooru; our importer directly inserts into the database rather than using the normal upload process and seems to keep the extension as it was on Danbooru).

If you've tried uploading a JPEG file with a .jpg extension and it changed the extension to .jpeg, it's probably the latter, in which case there's nothing you can do.

Why do you care, though? It's just an extension. It has absolutely nothing to do with what's actually inside the file. Anyone saving the files can change the extension to .jpg if they prefer. We do not process or modify anything about the original image; the only image processing we do is on the sample and thumbnail. The original images are exactly the same whether they have a .jpg or .jpeg extension.

Two annoyances can crop up.

1: A site or program that is coded by a complete dumbass wont accept jpeg files, meaning you need to rename the extension.
2: On sites like this that use checksums as filenames, your own personal archive can end up with duplicates.

You can't fix stupid but the file search program Everything allows mass-renaming for instant correction.

It can be a bit annoying, yes, but it's pretty easy to fix. I know of two different renaming programs on Windows that'll do it quickly: Rename-It! ( sourceforge.net/projects/renameit/ ) and Métamorphose ( file-folder-ren.sourceforge.net/ ). Rename-It! is the simpler one and the one I'd recommend if you just want to mass change file extensions.

you ask why I care about these image formats, they are simply using them as a way of saying that the images I post are duplicated more times i can remenber, but i will only accept them when they are inferior copies.

The extension has nothing to do with duplicate checking. .jpg and .jpeg are both extensions for the exact same file format and mean the exact same thing, and we treat them exactly the same. If your uploads are duplicates, they will be duplicates whether the extension is .jpg or .jpeg.
