Yeah I feel that, but I kinda also like separate bundles of those. When I'm a fan of a certain game OST, it's usually by association from liking the game composer (I obsess a shit ton on Motoi Sakuraba for one), and I know it'd please me if game composers did "rejected" compilations.
The rejected tracks are like, rejected in the literal sense, as in "I wasn't paid for them" (contrary to "it's theirs, but they are not using them in the end").
I used to be a drug dealer until weed got legalized. I'm usually always poor, so this was a pretty good gig. I'm always doing various projects simultaneously tho. I have 3 "band"-kind of projects, am working on my own game projects, doing pixel art/animations, fan art, concept art, concept design, game music, mockup-game music. Me and the boyfriend are starting our "doujin circle" thing soon, and also preparing a really epic Batman fan story/comic. All of this even if this means being poor all the time.
I used to tour with my band in bars around nearby provinces, just for beers. All the change we made from selling CDs was lost in gas/groceries before we even made it back home.
But was it all worth it? Absolutely. It always is.
Motoi Sakuraba is pretty amazing, he was a big selling point on the Tales games that he worked on. I kinda see your point about a track being included in the budget but not in the game vs. not even making it that far.
I feel you though, do what you love. I would much rather have a job that I enjoy over a job that I hate but makes a lot more money.
I'm not artistically inclined myself~ I draw and play instruments like an inebriated monkey.
