Japanese thoughts on western shows
Posted on: 02/17/24 08:36PM

I know that westaboos exist, but i'm curious about what japanese people think about western shows like Star Trek, House M.D, Spartacus Blood and Sand or movies like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Pulp Fiction, etc.

Welp, this is not exactly the best place to find their opinion about that stuff.

For what i understand they love The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and i suspect that Harry Potter was the inspiration for LWA and the Magnostadt arc of Magi: the Labyrinth of Magic. i wonder about the rest, i find it interesting when their art is inspired by the art we make.

You do realize Japan is part of the first world, right? And that means they have access to most of the same shit we do. And the American military has bases there. And there are English teachers and other languages there as well, so it’s likely that a great majority of them have seen western shows that are either adapted or dubbed in Japanese, or else they at least are familiar with it. Hollywood is not just an American business, and not everyone is a weeb NEET who posts on the #chans.

I mean, the only perceptive I have is, well, the word "anime" in its intended language refers to anything that is animated.

Meaning if you went and interviewed random folks off the street in Japan, and asked them to name their favorite anime, well by sheer popularity you're going to get a lot of Disney franchise answers.

So in that sense, I want to think there probably isn't as big of a categorical divide in your average Japanese citizen.

I'm no expert, and that's merely conjecture on my part as an American. lol

What does have anything to do with the entertainment?

Hollywood is not just an American business.

Yeah definitely not the best place to ask. Unless there's someone on here who lives in japan and talks with japanese people on a daily basis about western media.

And even then, Japan is still an entire country with differing opinions and many different people, just like all countries. There are far too many people that a simple answer couldn't suffice.

Personally I have seen videos of japanese citizens reacting positively when asked about western franchises, so I'd like to think it's a bit like how we (western english speakers) culturally view anime, except not nearly as polarized and more positive/open minded.

Well he can get an answer from noticing some anime like One Piece for example has many Tom and Jerry references which Luffy uses them as fighting moves.

I only know like 2 westaboos, the popular one Rariatto who LOVES Cartoon Network, and a different one who makes ben 10 and TMNT fan art. Maybe a 3rd one would be that guy who translated some Marvel comics and started the Marvel vs Capcom series.

Personally it often feels like Japan doesn't care all that much about other's creations, at least among artists.
