Discovering new music
Posted on: 02/22/24 02:09PM

If there is another thread for this then apologies but I'm not spending time digging it up.

OK, we can all go and search for new music but I find it's more enjoyable when it's on someone's recommendation. I really want to find hidden gems that don't sound like other music.

So: here are a few from me:

"Cyber Bird" by Takashi Yoshimatsu is an incendiary concerto for saxophone that defies easy categorization. I often find that the first movement alone just leaves me exhausted.

"Ballet Mechanique" is almost in a class by itself in how it embodied fururist values in music and might have been the first music video (don't quote me on that). Written by George Antheil, it is the beautiful rhythm of the factory and the city.

"The World God Only Knows" is a cartoon that you might all already know (sorry!) but the theme song is part of a cool 8 minute piece that synthesizes angelic lyricism with a technological element that perfectly captures what this (really good) show represented.

Our mission is searching music to recommend to you? or everyone else?

Because music is something extremely subjective It is a complicated mission. What is good for you, for others can be boring, antiquated or strange. Also, sometimes your enjoyment of some tracks is influenced by experiences you had with that track. So, for someone that lack those experiences they might find it not as interesting as you did.

I am one of the only few persons that listens to the music people share on this forum, but I need a link.

I am listening to this right now: youtu.be/4BrKsMFVn6c

I've been listening to strictly Coheed and Cambria since like, December.

I bought tickets to see them in July, super excited.

Why it sounds wrong when you say that you are super excited for something.

I stopped listening to Coheed and Cambria when The Unheavenly Creatures album released. I only enjoyed The Dark Sentencer from it so that's why I decided to move on. That being said I still have a soft spot for The Second Stage Turbine Blade and I've even read there comic book The Amory Wars. Which gives me a lot of appreciation for there songs 21:13 and Al the Killer. I think I'm going to revisit them later tonight for old times sake.

I really started getting into them when The Unheavenly Creatures album came out, though I knew of them with a passing familiarity since about 2014 (my roommate at the time liked them, and Welcome Home was basically the only song I was familiar with.) The second part of The Unheavenly Creatures, Vaxis – Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind is definitely superior to the first part of it, its probably the first album I've managed to memorize from beginning to end. You should definitely check that one out if you havn't yet.

As far as the overarching story of the whole Amory wars thing goes I try not to get too hung up on actually following the albums in the way you would a traditional concept album as the songs don't really fit in a very cohesive story with a beginning middle and end, at least from what I can tell just from listening to them multiple times, I see them more as just really good albums with good songs, though I did try to follow the story of the newest album and I'm like, 60% there. I know little to nothing really of the story (with the exception of The Afterman, and even only in general) prior to the Vaxis saga.

ghansgraad.fandom.com/wiki/The_Ghansgraad_Wiki helped me out a lot in understanding the themes and story behind each song.

Anything from Shibayan Records. Half their stuff is amazing bossanova, the other half is various types of electronic music.

In no particular order and off the top of my head:

John Fahey A1 "Requiem For John Hurt" is a great introduction to "primitive guitar" which focuses on the sounds a guitar can make when a pick isn't used, just the fingers. A lot of people haven't heard of him but they're at minimum impressed by the technical skill shown here even if it's not their cup of tea.

Clan of Xymox "Jasmine and Rose" I've gotten into debates with people over whether this is indie rock, Gothic rock, Dark Romantic rock, etc. If you're already familiar with those genres then you've probably heard this before but if not this is a relatively accessible introduction. The Witching Hour "Ligea" is also good for similar reasons.

iqdoom "Only Ruins Left" is associated with martial industrial and Dark Folk. I'm trying to focus this list on stuff relatively conventional compared to what one would usually associate with these genres. You can expect a lot of martial industrial to be much more ambient and/or meant to induce strong indescribable emotion, more avant garde. It's not usually as cheerful as this.

crap clap "the time" is a softer and sorta jazzy Japanese indie rock piece. I could easily fill this list with obscure OPs/EDs, city pop, and Japanese folk/indie rock but I'll try to keep it fresher than that. I realize a lot of these aren't super life shattering I'm mainly going off stuff I like and think others in this thread might not have been exposed to.

Tim Follins "Pictionary Title Screen Theme" is video game soundtrack, sure, maybe not in the spirit of the thread but give it a listen and see if you like it. The boss music for the video game Plok! is by the same composer and it also has darker techno vibes.

IFA Wartburg "Freie Deutsche Jugend" is a poppy 80s song from the DDR you might've not heard before. I'm not trying to promote East German ideology but I've got a bit of a soft spot for any foreign propaganda music that's catchy. I found this through a Signalis meme of all things.

Thibaut de Champagne "Seigneurs, Sachiez" is a Medieval French propaganda song. Listen to the one by René Zosso with the Clemencic Consort if you can since a lot of other renditions are much slower, you want the one that's more upbeat and with more brass.

Sturgill Simpson "Sing Along" While by a country singer it sorta eludes genre classifications. You might've already heard about it because the music video went viral a few years ago. Still, give it a good listen.
