So early copies of FF7:R have been going around and a scene was leaked that (should) settle a 27 year old debate:

Cloud kisses Tifa. A romantic kiss straight in the mouth. On a romantic date night.

Well I guess that ends the debate on whether or not who Cloud is canonically paired with! It's tifa, not aerith.

The only canon pairing is Cloud and Barret on a bros night out.

They were always romantically involved, I thought. They’re also just childhood friends, and that doesn’t mean Aerith or even Yuffie can’t be into him at some point, too.

Also, there was some kind of sexual tension between Cloud, Tifa, and Barret in the original (especially with her as the foster mother of Marlene) so we can’t even be sure if she hasn’t slept with Barret at some point, too.

Well judging by the background characters' relationships, we now need to consider the possibly that Cloud, Tifart, and the lovely Aerith are in a polymultipous relationship

So the non-remake, non-remaster series is canon to the original now?

From my understanding, it was a long standing debate between fans for many years on which relationship was the "canon" relationship. Which girl Cloud would actually confess his feelings for.

Cloud kissing Tifa pretty much confirms that she's who Cloud truly loves. Cloud and Aerith don't kiss, Cloud and Yuffie don't kiss, but Cloud and Tifa do.

I thought they were making the remake a trilogy though? Are you assuming Cloud will exclusively be with Tifa? Because like the stuff in Crisis Core kinda suggests the opposite, unless Squeenix is gonna retcon that, too.


It’s part of Barret’s backstory in the sidequest that has to be completed in order to find his ultimate weapon. Dyne gets gunned down by Shinra, while Barret holds him by the hand, sparing him on the verge of death, facing the edge of a cliff. Barret also gets shot, letting his friend go, which explains why they both got prosthetic gun limbs. Before Dyne (presumably) dies, he tells Barret to head to Midgar and take care of his daughter, Marlene, which is where he meets Tifa and asks her to help him raise her. After that, Cloud has been a Shinra merc for a few years and decides to join AVALANCHE, when the game officially begins.

Crisis Core just made Cloud part of Zack's harem.
