That's the problem with anime these days. The first they want you to think is the girls are hot. Back when Azumanga aired, characters still had personalities.

Azumanga wasn't a cheap fanservice.

All the girls had over the top, unrealistic personalities. Not exactly the brilliance you're preaching. That, and there was plenty of fanservice.
