Dr. Freeman would definitely win no question

In a fair fight, an MIT nerd in a lab safety suit would be no match for a meticulously trained and enhanced supersoldier in proper powered armor.

Fortunately for Gordon, the G-man and his 'employers' would ensure that any fight is difficult enough to be useful but unfair enough that their mute pawn always prevails. He's like Batman. There are fights he can't win, but he'll never actually get into one.

No offense, I love Half Life, Gordon's awesome, but he would never stand a chance against Master Chief. As Anon1 said. The way the rest of this image would play out, Master Chief would raise his assault rifle and unload in Freeman's face before he could even react.

When I saw this picture, I immediately heard Chief's voice.

"Yeah... that'll work."

Even though I'm a big fan of both, in a fair fight, MCPO John-117 is a far superior combatant. Both of them have genius-level intellect, but the suits that augment them have a technology gap of several generations. The HEV Mark V is early 21st-century technology, cobbled together in Kleiner's lab. The MJOLNIR Mark VI is the culmination of billions of credits in defense spending by the UNSC in the mid-26th century, using the most advanced fabrication techniques available.

The Master Chief can beat what is basically an 1100-pound, nine-foot tall gorilla over the head a few times with his bare hands to kill it. Gordon Freeman has trouble taking down opponents half as tough as Brutes with the crowbar.

Even at range, their most powerful weapons are in a completely different class. The Tau Cannon, when charged up, can take out a tank in just a few shots. The Spartan Laser would go right through that very same tank in a single shot, and still cause severe damage to anything standing on the opposite side of the target.

Both Gordon and the Chief are combat pragmatists, too. In Half-Life 2, Gordon uses Father Grigori's traps to dispatch a large number of headcrab zombies. In Halo: The Fall of Reach, the Chief takes out a bunch of Banshees using buried 55-gallon drums filled with napalm, mines and unused rifle cartridges.

Sure, Gordon's fought tougher things than the Chief and won. Just look at Gargantua. That thing could stomp both their asses flat. However, I don't think the Chief's stupid enough to be lured between two electrical transformers, or allow himself to be shelled by mortar fire.

Either of them could win, it just depends on how prepared the winner is. If it came down to a fistfight though, Master Chief outside his suit is more than a match for Gordon inside his suit. That's an incontrovertible fact.

The way this pic is set up, Gordon would probably break his fist. MC doesn't actually need to move.
Also: why the fuck doesn't his HEV have a helmet? Presumably, some "Hazardous Environments" would have toxic gases...?

"Even at range, their most powerful weapons are in a completely different class."

Assuming adaptability is equal, this isn't really a relevant point in a fully conceived combat scenario. If Master Chief ends up fighting in a modern situation, he'll be at a disadvantage for ammo and supplies; his technology is an edge, but not a persistent one. In contrast, Dr. Freeman in a future setting would adapt to the futuristic and alien weaponry in no time, and would likely use them to full effect -- as a scientist and not a soldier, there's also potential that he may understand the weapons better than Master Chief given time.

Further still, it depends on how you compare the characters, based on their descriptions or their game performance. Master Chief's incredibly inflated skills and strengths are negligible when comparing game performance -- while he demonstrates better melee, he does not exhibit superior speed or agility. And in terms of aiming and tactical skill, all is equal considering they are at the limits of their players.

Finally, two additional points on behalf of Gordon; he's repeatedly shown to have uncanny luck (which may be outside manipulation of his combat scenarios) and a distinct tendency to explore unusual options -- his knack with vents is more than just level design, but in Episode 1, Alex Vance actually elaborates that he's known for being about to quickly climb through narrow passages.

Granted, I still imagine that the training and tech gaps give Master Chief an edge, but I have to root for the underdog myself. Dr. Freeman be the shit.

True, but the games don't give an accurate portrayal of the Chief's abilities. In the game they had to make him that way so the game wasn't too easy. In actual canon, his reflexes, speed, strength and stamina are far, far superior to normal humans. And I'm assuming that Cortana isn't with Chief for this fight...

As for adaptability, the Chief is also very good at adapting. For example, he's able to effectively adapt and survive multiple sudden changes in situations (the crashed pelican in the first game and the covenant patrols that come for him after, discovering the Flood, helping the Monitor and then later fighting against him, being dropped into High Charity without any weapons, the Flood landing on earth, the Gravemind turning on him and the Arbiter after Truth's death... just to name a few). He's also able to quickly adapt to using unknown/alien technology even without any previous training in the use of them (I.E, most of the Covenant arsenal and vehicles & and the Sentinel Beam). Most of the human weapons in halo aren't that different from the human weapons in Half-life 1 and 2 and even the Combine weapons aren't much more complicated than some of the Covenant weapons.

As for uncanny luck, so does the Chief. That's the whole reason Cortana chose him, because she knew he had absurdly good luck. It's what saves him from drowning in that lake on Delta Halo (he's in a more than 1000 pound suit. It doesn't matter how strong you are, you're gonna sink), it's how he survived the jump from the Keyship that Truth used to leave that same Halo and go to Earth to open the portal, not to mention saved his hide during their first few encounters with the Covenant in the books and plenty of other examples I'm probably not aware of.

And all of this is without even mentioning his armor's durability, the shielding technology, the military training, years and years of combat experience fighting aliens that were bent on humanity's destruction (and came a lot closer to succeeding, if you ask me. The Covenant never planned on taking them prisoner, they were just going to exterminate them all immediately).

Like I said, Freeman's cool and pretty awesome for an unaltered human, but he doesn't stand a chance against the Chief. Especially not in a close-quarters, melee battle like this picture is depicting.

Any time 2 or more similar fanbases of any genre (video games, anime, board games, movies, etc.) are mentioned anywhere on the internet, this will happen. I'm pretty sure it is, or at least should be, one of the rules of the Internet.

To throw my own $0.02 into this, though, I just have to ask this: Freeman's going melee against Master Chief. Last I checked, the only melee-dedicated weapon Master Chief had at his disposal was some sort of plasma sword (I don't play HALO much if you can't tell) that tended to do two things: Look awesome and kill in one hit.

So in this case, Freeman's got 3 possible scenarios: MC's unarmed (unlikely), packing heat (Freeman's screwed), or packing that plasma sword (Freeman's REALLY screwed).

I'd say picking this fight was a bad idea.

In a world where the rules of awesome replace the rules of physics... Gordon would win; and he doesnt need a helmet because he has glasses, capish?
