Technically, DBZ was supposed to end at the Frieza saga, as the creator wanted it. But the studio pushed him to continue it as Goku became a popular character. The original idea, was to have Goku die and Gohan take over as his successor. However, due to demand from the studio, and fans, the story became more and more full of plot holes. Cell was decent, and could've been a good end, but they pushed him to do Buu and it went further into the lame DBZ we know now. Frieza was supposed to be the climactic end. And it's where I consider DBZ to have ended.
