It is considered the oldest extant Japanese narrative and an early example of proto-science_fiction. It primarily details the life of a mysterious girl called Kaguya-hime, who was discovered as a baby inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant. She is said to be from Tsuki-no-Miyako (月の都 "The Capital of the Moon") and has unusual hair that shines like the moon. Inuyasha the Movie: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass uses poems referring to Kaguya-Hime's tasks for the five Princes. The first was told to bring her the stone begging bowl of the Buddha from India. The second was told to retrieve a jewelled branch from the island of Penglai. The third was told to seek the legendary robe of the fire-rat of China. The fourth must retrieve a colored jewel from a dragon's neck. The final prince was told to find the cowrie which was born from swallows. Oh!_Edo_Rocket is an anime that features a girl who came from the moon on a mission, and wants to return there. The video game Okami features a version of the bamboo girl's story which plays into the game's larger storyline. Bishoujo_Senshi_Sailor_Moon is a manga, anime and tokusatsu franchise around the story of a Moon princess reincarnated on Earth. The second Sailor Moon movie, Sailor Moon S: Hearts In Ice, specifically references the tale, in which Luna takes on the guise of Princess Kaguya. Queen Millennia, a series by Leiji Matsumoto, has the subtitle "New Tales from the Bamboo-Cutter" and features a princess from outer space. Kaguyahime_(manga), a manga by Reiko Shimizu. Houraisan_Kaguya from Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable_Night is the same princess from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter but the story takes place in modern times in the land of the illusionary - Gensokyo. She also appears in the manga Silent_Sinner_in_Blue, Cage_in_Lunatic_Runagate and Inaba_of_the_Moon_and_Inaba_of_the_Earth. She is often seen in possession of the five items tasked to the princes. In Keroro_Gunsou, Giroro retrieves five items similar to those tasked to the princes to give to Hinata_Natsumi for her birthday.
