Bio Animation studio based in Kyoto. Its name is often abbreviated to KyoAni. It was founded in 1981 by husband and wife Hatta Hideaki and Hatta Yoko, and at that time was made up of ex Mushi Pro animators. It started off mostly assisting other studios in animation but it did not rise to prominence until the 2000s when it began making its own series, most of which were adaptations. Said adaptations were highly successful and increased the popularity and recognition of the source material. Most of their output consists of adaptations of manga, light novels, and visual novels. They tend to favor comedies and dramas, many of which have moe appeal. They are known for creating extremely detailed backgrounds, often based on real life locations, even on a TV series budget. They also tend to cast relatively unknown seiyuu in the lead roles of their anime, which has helped launched the careers of many of them. The studio is also known for doing the vast majority of their work completely in-house with minimal outsourcing and has even established its own school to train animators in order to maintain the in-house focus. Many of the animators are salaried employees as opposed to freelance workers. Starting in 2009, the studio shifted to mostly adapting light novels that are properties published by themselves. They do this by holding an annual Kyoto Animation Awards where various writers can submit their stories and the studio will decide on which ones they'd like to adapt. Although they have animated many series about high school girls and are not averse to fan service, they often go out of their way to avoid showing any of the female characters' panties even when the girls are doing things that would realistically flash their panties i.e. Tomoyo's high kicks. The only exception to this is the cheerleading routines in Lucky Star and during Mikuru jumping over the camera in an over-the-top, amateur-film parody bit. They have frequently collaborated with Full Metal Panic! writer Gatoh Shoji who has written scripts for their anime and also helped make Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. They have also adapted Key's seasonal trilogy of Kanon, Air, and CLANNAD. A disgruntled man named Aoba Shinji, accusing the studio of plagiarizing his novel, set fire to the studio, claiming the lives of 35 Kyoto Animation employees and sending many others to the hospital, including himself. In response, North American anime distributor Sentai Filmworks, which had localized Kyoto Animation's work in the past, established a GoFundMe fundraiser that raised over 1 million US dollars within its first day, quickly surpassing its initial goal of $750,000.
