Tolkien, which debuted on July 29, 1954. Due to the massive length, scale, and scope of the story, the books were split into three parts released over the span of two years. The novels are a sequel to Tolkien's previous novel, The Hobbit. The story is once again set in Middle Earth. Bilbo Baggins, now an old hobbit, lives a semi-peaceful life in his home town, the Shire. However, he is troubled by one possession he recovered from his previous adventure, a Ring that he had stolen from a strange creature named Gollum. This Ring troubles him so much that he is ultimately unable to trust himself with its possession, so he leaves the Shire and entrusts to his cousin Frodo Baggins. Frodo accepts the Ring, but it is not until a meeting with the wise wizard Gandalf that he begins to understand just what the Ring is. It is actually a Ring of Power, originally owned by the Dark Lord Sauron who's is looking to retrieve it. It's a ring of great corrupting power and it is not safe for it to remain in the Shire. Gandalf advises Frodo to take it away from his hometown. Frodo follows Gandalf's advice, and leaves the Shire, accompanied by three fellow Hobbits: Samwise Gamgee, Pippin Took, and Merry Brandybuck. As he sets out on his journey, Frodo soon realizes that he has gotten involved in a conflict that threatens the entire world and will put his will to the ultimate test. The series is essentially one chapter of Tolkien's story of the Middle Earth, The Silmarillion. As such, the series is known for its very thorough world building with Tolkien making up histories, unique languages, cultures, songs, and poems for his story. The books were released to initially mixed critical reception. However, it won the International Fantasy Award in 1957, and its stature and influence steadily grew since then to the point that many works of fantasy fiction in all forms of media were influenced in some way by it. The novels were adapted into all mediums, radio, animation, film, and video games. The most well known adaptation is the live action film trilogy written and directed by Peter Jackson that was released over the course of 2001-2003, which notably adapted the entire story. The films were highly successful and influential in their own right, proving to studios that adaptations of epic fantasy novels were feasible in live action and lucrative. The films made extensive use of CGI to make its battles seem even larger in scope that can be pulled off with only practical effects and with its depiction of Gollum, showed that all CG characters could be as expressive as real life actors. The films were the breakthrough for the special effects company WETA, and helped popularize New Zealand as a tourist spot as Jackson chose his home country to represent Middle Earth.
