Music is composed by Senoue Jun, Hataya Naofumi, Kobayashi Hideaki, Sugiyama Keiichi, Nakagawa Teruhiko, Minabe Yutaka, Nanba Mariko, Kumatani Fumie, and Ohtani Tomoya. It is a direct sequel to Sonic Adventure 2, but is more light hearted than that game was and is designed to be more accessible to newcomers with a more straightforward plot. It brought back Shadow even though he was originally intended to be a one shot character and Metal Sonic who was absent from the series for years. It was also intended to celebrate the twelfth anniversary of the Sonic series. The characters are split into four teams, Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles), Team Dark (Shadow, Rouge, E-123 Omega), Team Rose (Amy, Cream, Big), and Team Chaotix (Vector, Espio, Charmy) Team Sonic springs into action once they hear that Dr. Eggman has apparently created an incredibly powerful weapon and intends to take over the world. The other teams soon become involved in the struggle against Eggman. Team Chaotix, who are part of a detective agency, has been hired by a mysterious client to find Dr. Eggman. Shadow is discovered locked in a chamber by Rouge who reawakens him, but he has lost his memory. Nevertheless, the two of them team up with E-123 Omega to find Eggman. Team Rose are searching for their lost friends Chocola and Froggy when they are soon involved with the battle against Eggman's forces. During gameplay, the team members are together at all times and the characters have special team based attacks. Gameplay is like the Sonic and Shadow platforming segments of the Sonic Adventure as opposed to the blend of gameplay styles the Sonic Adventure series used. Athough Team Chaotix first appeared in Knuckles Chaotix. The developers have stated that their appearance in this game is a re-imagining of them and therefore, their first canon appearance. Knuckles Chaotix was made non-canonical. Seaside Hill represented this game in Sonic Generations. However, the redesigned level incorporated more underwater segments to distinguish it more from Green Hill Zone.
