It is also the first Jojo story arc to be serialized in a seinen magazine although it remains stylistically and tonally similar to previous Jojo arcs. It is set in nineteenth century United States. Johnny Joestar was a great horse racer, but he has fallen from grace after his legs were broken and is unable to walk though he can still ride a horse. He has been despondent since then, but he regains hope once he meets Gyro Zeppeli, a man who throws steel balls as weapons. Once Johnny touches one of those balls, he suddenly regains the ability to walk for a brief moment. He becomes fascinated with Gyro and his mysterious steel balls and decides to participate in the upcoming cross-country Steel Ball Run horse race organized by the tycoon Steven Steel alongside Gyro. The two men team up and become close friends over the course of the race with Zeppeli teaching him the secrets behind the steel balls. However, the two men realize that the Steel Ball Run race is not just a simple race; the shady US President Funny Valentine has taken an interest in the race and is using the race in order to locate special corpse parts scattered throughout the country that if put together will grant a person special powers. Gyro and Johnny must fight for their lives and retrieve the corpse parts before the President gets his hands on them and beat their competition. This arc makes numerous references to past Jojo arcs and even features alternate universe versions of old characters.
