It started in 1969 under the name Calpis Comic Theater and the first anime to be released under the label was the 1969 anime adaptation of the manga Dororo_to_Hyakkimaru. This first release was an anomaly in that it was the only manga adaptation. Subsequent anime were broadcast under the Calpis Comic Theater label before it was changed to its more well known name World Masterpiece Theater in 1979. The franchise would become known for adapting famous books and novels, often those from Western origins, from around the world into anime TV series. These adaptations have no connection to each other besides being broadcast under the label and being mostly animated by Nippon_Animation. Most of the source novels were targeted towards children so the adaptations are all family friendly. Each of the anime would start each episode with a brief title card displaying World Masterpiece Theater and the sponsor before going into the opening credits. The adaptations often follow the general story of their source material, but include plenty of new story elements to fill their often 40+episode runtimes.
