Now Viewing: angel_beats!Tag type: Copyright (エンジェルビーツ!) A multimedia project created by Maeda Jun of Key_(Company) that started in 2009 with the release of the one volume light novel Angel Beats! Track Zero. It consists of a TV series, a manga, and a series of light novels, and a visual novel. Unlike most of Key's works, it did not originate as a visual novel and the visual novel adaptation that expands on the series' story was not released until 2015. One of the main reasons for this multimedia approach was because the creators felt that a TV series with 13 20 minute episodes was not enough to tell the story that Maeda had envisioned. The anime TV series was directed by Kishi Seiji and was animated by P.A. Works. It ran from April 3, 2010- June 26, 2010. Maeda Jun was the head writer of the series and also composed the music like he did for many of the visual novels he had worked on. Much of Maeda's stylistic trademarks are present in the series and like most of Key's work, blends comedy and drama, although this series is more action-oriented than other Key works. Key's president Baba Takahiro made the decision to split the visual novel into multiple volumes due to the sheer size and scope of the story as well as the amount of characters, a decision Maeda was initially opposed to. Baba felt that if Key decided to release the entire novel at once, it would take too long for Key to finish production of the novel. The novel follows the anime's story up to episode 9, but diverges from there to focus on individual character scenarios. The novel was originally intended to be a role playing game before Maeda was convinced to make it a novel like past Key games. It is set in a high school stuck in limbo. All of the characters are dead and are brought to this school after their real life deaths. Because the characters are already dead, they can't die again although they can still feel pain, which is often exploited for morbid humor. Amnesiac protagonist Otonashi wakes up in this world and is recruited by Yuri, the leader of the Shinda Sekai Sensen, into her organization of rebels. They are on a mission to resist God because, according to Yuri, God dealt them a cruel hand in life and made them die with regrets. Their enemy is an extremely powerful white haired girl named Angel who is also the student council president of the school. She is forcing the SSS to act like the other students of the school, dubbed NPCs, who act like normal real world students but appear lifeless and ultimately end up disappearing from this limbo world. But Otonashi learns that the limbo world works differently than he and the SSS initially think it does. He also learns the Angel is not the girl Yuri and co. think she is. As Otonashi learns more about the setting, he gradually takes a more active role in helping the school's students and begins to remember who he really is.
