The cast and crew of the original series returned to work on the film. The film assumes that the viewers have seen either the original series or the Death & Rebirth compilation film. Due to the nature of the film there are major spoilers concerning the original series so spoiler wary viewers should be wary of looking up information on it online or reading the below summary. Things are looking bleak for NERV: the already troubled and insecure Ikari Shinji has been pushed into a near catatonic state thanks to the trauma of killing his friend Kaworu Nagisa. Soryu Asuka Langely is still comatose after the mind rape she suffered at the hands of Arael. Ikari Gendou, the leader of NERV, has proved himself to be untrustworthy and in pursuit of his own agenda all along. With the Angels out of the picture, the mysterious organization SEELE finally launches its ultimate plan to take control of NERV and initiate their apocalyptic Instrumentality Project that will merge everyone's consciousness together. Shinji soon finds himself once again saddled with the enormous responsibility of fighting for humanity and his actions will ultimately decide the fate of humanity. The film is notably much darker and bloodier than the original series. Much like its parent series, this film is also subject to a wide variety of interpretations and can be seen as either an alternate ending to the TV series or a complement to the original series' abstract ending. The film has a wide variety of visual experimentation, including brief live action images and the film originally had a much longer live action sequence that was eventually cut. After this film Anno would go on to focus on directing live action films for a few years before coming back to anime.
