It was adapted into a cult hit psychedelic road trip comedy movie directed by Terry Gilliam in 1998 and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. The script was written by Gilliam, Tony Grisoni, Alex Cox, and Tod Davies. The soundtrack is composed by Ray Cooper. The book is based on two road trips Thompson took with attorney/activist and fellow drug addict Oscar Zeta Acosta in the years 1971 and 1972. While the story is based off of these experiences, both Thompson and Acosta are renamed Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo respectively. The book and film tell the story of Duke and Gonzo who head to Las Vegas in 1971 to report on the Mint 400 motorcycle race and the various misadventures the characters get into on this assignment. The story is highly surreal and notably makes it ambiguous how much of it is real or hallucinated by its drug-addled main characters. It was also intended to be a commentary on what Thompson saw as the destruction of the American dream and 1960s counterculture. The book initially was frequently criticized when it debuted, but over time has gained more appreciation. The film adaptation also met a similar fate. Some of the film's publicity photos are frequently parodied and homaged such as the image of Raoul and Gonzo looking back while driving a car and staring directly at the viewers.
