Now Viewing: god_of_warTag type: Copyright A dark and ultra-violent hack and slash action game series based off of Greek mythology and also inspired by the original Clash of the Titans movie. It is one of Sony's more popular video game franchises in the 2000s-2010s. The original game debuted in 2005 for the Playstation 2. The game series tells the story of Kratos, a Spartan warrior tormented by the death of his family. He initially helps the Greek gods out in the hope that they will get rid of his nightmares, but as the series goes on, he grows tired of their manipulating him and turns against them. Kratos is especially brutal and vicious for a video game protagonist. Not only does he kill the bosses in very graphically depicted and gruesome ways, he also tends to kill people who pose no threat to him whenever it suits his purposes or to solve puzzles. The game does not provide an option for players to be merciful so some puzzles can only be solved by Kratos taking a person where he needs him to be and then offing him. Besides the game's extreme violence, the game gets away with a considerable amount of female nudity. Female characters often wear outfits that allow for their nipples to be visible and there are even short sex mini games where Kratos can sleep with various women; the actual act is not shown, but it is clear from the sound effects what is happening. The series is well known for its extensive use of action commands during combat. After an enemy is injured enough, a button prompt appears over an enemy's head. Once the player gets close enough to the enemy and follows the button prompt, Kratos proceeds to unleash a spectacular and brutal finishing move or attack to either finish off the enemy or move on to the next stage of the battle. This mechanic has also appeared in other hack and slash action games. The series is also famous for its large scale boss battles, a trend that began with the Hydra battle in the first game. Kratos takes on monsters and gods taken from the Greek pantheon, some of whom are so large that they make Kratos look like a tiny speck in comparison. This series influenced other action games to create similar larger scale boss battles. While the first game had relatively few bosses, the quantity of boss battles increased in subsequent games. Each entry in the series also, after a short opening narration, throws the player and Kratos into the middle of a big action-packed battle that culminates into a fight with a massive boss. Besides Greek mythology, the game series is also inspired by Devil May Cry in its style of combat.
