Its capital and largest city is Sapporo. With the prefecture containing nearly one fourth of Japan's total arable land, Agriculture plays a large role in Hokkaido's Economy. However, Tourism is also a important industry since the prefecture is a popular place for foreigners and Japanese citizens alike wishing to escape the humid parts of East and Southeast Asia.
