Commenting is one of the major ways to communicate in the Gelbooru community. This is a community after all, so contributing to the ongoing discussion will give you an identity and helping out is always a good thing. If you know something interesting about an image (such as an author's comment or related video), but there's no designated place to put it, the comment field is where it goes.

If you're unsure about something in a post you uploaded, we recommend asking on the forum rather than leaving a comment. This could be anything from tagging parts of a post to figuring out a new artist's artist tag. We'd much rather you make a forum post and give someone else the opportunity to help out than leave it half-finished with no way for anyone to know something needs fixing.

Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when commenting:

Please comment in English.
Comments in languages that are thematically related to the image or to the topic of discussion are fine, but most comments should be posted in English. Our team doesn't have many multilingual members, so moderating comments in languages other than English is prohibitively time-consuming.

Be polite.
Senseless aggravation is indistinguishable from trolling, and in egregious cases can lead to a ban. Try to write clearly, with proper grammar and spelling. This just makes comments more comfortable to read. Don't worry if English is not your first language, just do your best.

Racism is not tolerated.
Even in jest. This includes any malicious or disparaging comment about an ethnicity or sexual orientation.

DO NOT POST IN ALL-CAPS.
Posting with the Caps-Lock on makes you look disruptive and stupid. Remember, you only need to move your pinky seven-sixteenths of an inch to not sound like a buffoon.

Mark your spoilers.
Gelbooru is a spoiler-free community. Remember, not everyone watches a show as soon as it comes out. Spoilers should be always be marked, even if they're several years old. Spoilers are marked [ spoiler ] like this. [ /spoiler ]

Don't post silly one-liners.
We are a fairly focused community and inane banter is kept to a minimum. Don't just say "wow that's hot" or "lol", that adds nothing to the discussion and just takes up space.

Do not abuse emoticons.
Don't post lines such as "OMG >_< this is so funny~~~!! xD She totaly did that on purpose :PPP btw any1 have link to full download >_>". One emoticon per post should be the absolute upper limit, and you should be way below that on average. Just think how often you
make such faces when speaking in real life; that's how often you should be making them in comments.

Do not post "funny" dialogues.
Do not post comments with lines the characters in the picture are supposedly saying. There's nothing wrong with funny or witty comments, but those are neither. Similarly, do not reply/talk to a character from a post in your comment.

Do not write fanfiction for a post.
This is gelbooru.com, not fanfiction.net. Nobody is here to read your uninspired D-tier erotica about the pleasure of being cummed inside.

Do not roleplay (RP) in the comments.
Similarly, do not partake in RP outside of DMs. You may post RP requests in the appropriate channel of our Discord, however.

Try to be tasteful.
While a lot of the content on the site is pornographic, that doesn't mean that other users want to hear about your sex life. Don't brag about your sexual experiences. Also, don't brag about illegal activities or encourage other users to commit crimes, ESPECIALLY if it overlaps with aforementioned sexual experiences. Do not self insert/exclaim that you wish that were you, or similar. Horny posting often involves self-insert or role-play, try to avoid these.

Don't be sexist.
Commenting something along the lines of "all women should know their place/deserve to be raped" isn't clever, witty or funny - it's just gross. If you're here to vent about how inferior you believe a specific sex to be, then you've come to the wrong place.

Consider the forum.
If you have a suggestion for Gelbooru, such as a new tag or something like that, the forum is the place to post this. Linking the picture from the forum thread makes it much more permanent and more likely to be seen by admins and mods, which is a good place to start when trying to get a new tag or policy accepted.

Please do not "censor" your comment.
Even though most of the site's content is rated safe, Gelbooru should not be used by children. As such, there is no need or reason to censor your comments; it usually just comes off as annoying.

Fix obvious mistakes instead of posting a comment about it.
If you see a mistake that should be fixed, don't leave a comment about it - fix the mistake yourself. Instead of asking "Why is this explicit image rated safe?", just fix the rating. If you are not absolutely sure what to do, ask on the forums.

Do not request DMs in the comments.
Gelbooru is not a dating site. We don't want users trying to contact you many years in the future only to be disappointed that you have moved on.
