Now Viewing: kingsman:_the_secret_serviceTag type: Copyright Tag refers to the 2014 British spy action comedy film adaptation of the Mark Millar/Dave Gibbons comic, The Secret Service. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Jane Goldman and Vaughn, both of whom previously adapted Kick-Ass, which was also by Millar, and like that film, this film mixes over the top action and violence while poking fun at its own genre. Like said film, some of the film's content proved controversial and in some releases of the film, one major fight sequence is cut out due to censors finding the scene offensive, leaving only the build up and the aftermath. The film's soundtrack is composed by Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson. The film stars Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, and Sophia Cookson. Gary 'Eggsy' Unwin is an unemployed young man who lives with his mother, infant sister, and his abusive stepfather. He is actually more talented and intelligent than he seems, he had previously been trained by the Royal Marines, but ultimately didn't continue his training, using his skills to evade the police and steal. One day he is freed from jail, after a car theft goes wrong, by a mysterious suit-wearing gentleman named Harry Hart. Harry believes Eggsy is squandering his potential and invites him to join the Kingsman, a secret intelligence agency whose agents are code named after the Knights of the Round Table, that fronts as men's fashion shop. The Kingsman are also looking for new agents after one agent of theirs, Lancelot, was killed while trying to rescue Professor James Arnold. Hart convinces Eggsy to join and the young man undergoes rigorous training to become a Kingsman agent. Besides the difficulty of the tests themselves, Eggsy must also contend with prejudice from fellow agents due to coming from a working class background. Meanwhile, Hart searches for Professor Arnold who has been kidnapped by eccentric billionaire Richmond Valentine and races against time to figure out Valentine's plans. The film is a parody of and a throwback to the 1960s-1970s style James Bond films with quirky supervillains, gadgets, innuendo, and suave suit wearing heroes although this film is substantially more violent than any of them. The film's action scenes mostly consist of hand-to-hand and weapons based fighting. The filmmakers collaborated with the luxury retailer Mr. Porter to design the clothing in the film. Thanks to this collaboration, customers can purchase all of the clothing featured in the film at stores, the first film where this is possible. The film notably has quite a few of the more well known actors in the cast playing characters that are different from the roles they're usually known for such as Colin Firth, who is mostly known for playing romantic male leads, as the suave action hero Harry Hart. The film received generally positive reviews and grossed over 402 million dollars internationally.
