She made her debut in 1992 as Tansawa Masami in Crayon_Shin-chan, but didn't start voice acting full time until the early 2000s. She often plays young female characters, but after playing Shana in Shakugan_no_Shana, she became famous for frequently playing short teen tsundere characters, colloquially earning her the title of Queen of Tsundere. This reputation was cultivated by the anime studio J.C._Staff which often cast her as such characters. J.C. Staff adapted Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima, Toradora, and Hayate no Gotoku into anime. The Kugimiya Rie voiced female leads of those anime are collectively referred to by fans as the Four Tsundere Wonders. Some people will also add Aria Kanzaki, the heroine of Hidan no Aria (also adapted by J.C. Staff) as a Fifth Tsundere Wonder. Shana, Louise, and Taiga of Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima and Toradora respectively have also appeared in the crossover RPG Dengeki Gakuen RPG: Cross of Venus.
