A long-running and very popular American fighting game franchise famous for giving the winner an opportunity to finish their opponent in a creative and gruesome fashion (fatalities) and until Mortal Kombat 4, its use of digitized sprites. The series has been adapted into live action films, Television series, animation, and an online series. The games have sold about 30 million copies by 2012.

The franchise was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Tobias left the franchise after the third game but Boon remains involved with it to this day. The original game was released in 1992 at the arcades and was also at 1 point originally intended to be a Jean Claude Van Damme based video game, but the actor was at the time working with another company on a video game that ultimately was never released. Without the actor's involvement, the creators decided to make an original fighting game inspired by Hong Kong martial arts movies though the character Johnny_Cage, a parody of the actor, is a remnant of the game's original concept. Tobias, cited the Hong Kong wuxia movies 新蜀山劍俠 (Eng. title Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain) and 笑傲江湖 (Eng. title Swordsman) as his biggest influences when designing the game.

Its violence was shocking for the time due to being far more violent than most mainstream games made at the time, exacerbated by the use of a semi-realistic visual style since the sprites were based off of actors hired to dress up as the characters and perform the martial arts moves that the characters would use. Its brutal violence paved the way for more violent and envelope-pushing fighting games. The games were 2D until Mortal Kombat 4, but although the games continued to sell, the 3D Mortal Kombat games were generally considered to be inferior to the early 2D ones, which is perhaps why the 2011 Mortal Kombat game goes back to 2D although it uses 3D character models. Although the games are famous for their grisly carnage, adaptations tend to considerably tone down the violence and in some cases, remove the blood altogether. The violence was also toned down for the crossover game titled: Mortal_Kombat_Vs._DC_Universe. The 2011 Mortal Kombat game adds X ray moves, which are brutal attacks that gruesomely injure the victim and are visually depicted with X-rays. The game's models show the characters looking increasingly beat up the more damage they take. Even the winner of a fight will look terrible by the end of match unless the winner doesn't take any damage whatsoever. Starting with Mortal Kombat 2011, the games include guest fighters, usually from horror or similarly violent franchises like Nightmare on Elm Street or God of War.

The first live action film adaptation is one of the more well received video game film adaptations most of which are generally regarded as being low quality. It also introduced the techno theme song Mortal Kombat (Techno Syndrome 7'' Mix). Although it has never appeared in the games, said song became especially popular and has been considered to become an unofficial theme song for the franchise. The movie's portrayal of Kano and Raiden has also influenced the games and the characterization of both characters was altered to be closer to the movie's portrayal.

The series is set in a universe that is made up of six realms created by Elder Gods. The realms consist of Earthrealm (similar to the real world), Netherrealm (equivalent of hell), Outworld (ruled by Shao_Kahn), Seido (realm of order), Realm of Chaos, and Edenia. The original game consists of a tournament based in Earthrealm called Mortal Kombat, but as the series goes on, warriors from all of the realms become involved in larger conflicts where the outcome will affect all realms. The variety of realms also leads to a cast of characters where ninjas, cyborgs, demons, sorcerers, human martial artists, and US soldiers exist side by side. It is also common for characters to be combinations of the aforementioned categories.

The series has a habit of replacing the letter c with a k in its words. Pinball game designer and Shao Kahn voice actor Steve Ritchie came up with this quirk when the creators were stuck on what to call the original game. The creators were thinking of calling the game Combat and somebody wrote the word on a whiteboard. Someone else decided to change it to Kombat on a whiteboard as a joke. Ritchie saw the word and asked Boon, "Why don't you name [the game] Mortal Kombat?"

Like fellow fighting game series Dead_or_Alive, the series tends to give female characters who are old enough to have breasts, large_breasts. The outfits in later games have also become more revealing to further accentuate their assets.

The series notably has a tendency to incorporate ideas that originated as fan rumors/speculation and canonizing them. For example, the character of Ermac was inspired by a rumor that there was a secret character named Ermac in the original Mortal Kombat, which was inspired by a mysterious counter listing 'Ermacs.' Ermac turned out to stand for Error Macro and Ermac does not appear in the original Mortal Kombat but the developers decided to create a character with that name and he made his debut in Ultimate_Mortal_Kombat_3.

While ninjas are common character types in fighting games, the series has an unusually large quantity of them in the roster, inspired by the runaway popularity of the first two ninjas in the series, Sub-Zero and Scorpion_(Mortal_Kombat).
