It was also adapted into an anime in 2006, which comes up with its own ending. The androgynous Fujioka Haruhi is an oddball at her new school. She is from a working class background and is attending the very upper class Ouran Academy. She is also dressed shabbily and most people don't realize she is even a girl when they first meet her. As she stumbles around the vast school, she encounters the various handsome members of the Ouran High School Host Club led by Suou Tamaki which appeals to and 'serves' the female populace of the school. When she accidentally breaks an expensive antique vase, she ends up being dragged into working at the host club in order to repay the debt. Upon discovering her true gender the club capitalizes on her androgynous looks, cleans up her appearance, and has her dress in the same male school uniform as the rest of the members. Her true gender is kept a secret by the other members. She becomes quite popular amongst the female populace who see her as a handsome young man like the other members. Haruhi is initially exasperated by this turn of events, but as she spends more time working with the host club, she develops a strong relationship with the other members and builds a romantic relationship with Tamaki. The series affectionately pokes fun at many aspects of shojo fandom with the male characters being deliberately modeled after and in-universe intentionally act like the kinds of anime men fangirls stereotypically like.
