Now Viewing: the_shiningTag type: Copyright Originally a 1977 American horror novel by Stephen King, it has been adapted twice. The first, and the most well known incarnation of the story, was the 1980 film directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and Danny Lloyd. Said film initially received a mixed critical reception, but critical and general audience opinion of it grew over time and it has become an oft-parodied and homaged horror film. King, on the other hand, disliked the film because it considerably strayed from the novel, and later created a 1997 miniseries starring Steven Weber and Rebecca DeMornay and directed by Mick Garris that follows the novel's story more closely. All incarnations tell the story of Jack Torrance, an alcoholic writer who is suffering from a bad case of writer's block. He decides to take his wife Wendy and their 5 year old son Danny on a trip to the Overlook Hotel, which is looking for someone to act as the winter caretaker. Jack gets the position and the Torrance family stay there by themselves for the winter with Jack watching over the hotel while working on his manuscript. However, the family soon realize that this seemingly comfy hotel has some sinister secrets as they are repeatedly haunted by supernatural visions. Furthermore, the longer they stay there, the more the troubled Jack's sanity dwindles. . . The 1980 film was notable for being one of the earliest uses of Steadicam, which is a piece of camera technology that allows the operators to move the camera over surfaces without the camera bouncing around and shaking; this allows the filmmakers to film smooth tracking shots. The original novel later received a 2014 sequel called Doctor Sleep, also written by King, which follows the novel's continuity. Memes: Here's_Johnny!
