He was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York, and is of German, Irish, and British ancestry. He had a troubled childhood with a tense relationship with his father, and frequent moving around. Cruise had his first acting experience in the fourth grade when he and his classmates put on an improvised play called IT. He considered other roles such as becoming a priest, and playing football in high school, but when those roles didn't work out, he decided to focus entirely on pursuing acting. He made his film debut in a minor role in the 1981 movie Endless Love. Although he made his first breakthrough in the 1983 coming of age sex comedy Risky Business, he mostly appears in action or drama films. He became an A-list actor with the movie Top_Gun and from that movie onwards, he became one of the most iconic Hollywood actors with the majority of the films starring him becoming box office successes. During the 1980s-1990s, he primarily appeared in drama films with only a few action roles. Once the 21st century started, the ratio of drama to action films that Cruise starred in was reversed and he became more well known as a daredevil action hero. As an actor, Cruise often dedicates himself to learning whatever skill his character has to show during the movie. This can range from learning how to play pool like his character in The Color of Money, or learning how to control various vehicles so that he can do vehicle chases for real in the Mission Impossible film series. He does all of this in order to give the viewers the most authentic experience possible. He is well known for his running abilities, and in almost all of his movies, there is at least one sequence where he sprints. In the later stages of his career, he began producing many of the films he stars in. He formed a production company along with Paula Wagner called Cruise/Wagner Productions in 1993. This, along with his A-list superstar status, affords him a lot more creative control over his films than most lead actors, to the point that he's almost the second director for some of his films. On set, he often tries to rally his fellow cast and crew members to dedicate themselves to the project as much as he does. Starting with 2008's Valkyrie, he has frequently collaborated with writer/director Christopher Mcquarrie who has written or directed many of Cruise's films since. He is most well known for playing Pete_'Maverick'_Mitchell in Top_Gun and Ethan Hunt in the Mission:_Impossible films, which he also produces. By 2014, Cruise's movies grossed 7.9 billion dollars internationally. He is also frequently praised for his looks and has been ranked on most beautiful people in the world lists by magazines such as People and Empire multiple times. He was also used as inspiration for Aladdin's design in the 1992 Disney film version of Aladdin. He is also infamous for his association with the Church of Scientology, which he was introduced to by his first wife Mimi Rogers in 1986 but it was not until the 2000s that his reputation would suffer for it as he became publicly involved in various Scientology-related controversies. This, along with several public relations gaffes, led to the most significant slump in his career and hit to his reputation. He has also been involved in multiple litigation cases. Despite these controversies, he continues to be a popular leading man, and his career recovered in the 2010s thanks to starring in multiple successful and acclaimed films. In Japan, October 10, has a special 'Tom Cruise Day.' The Japan Memorial Day Association designated said date in 2006 to honor Cruise because he had made more trips to Japan than any other Hollywood film star. He also notably starred in the Hollywood adaptation of the light novel All_You_Need_is_Kill, Edge_of_Tomorrow. At a height of 5 feet 7 inches, he is also notably shorter than most Hollywood leading men. His films, however, disguise this fact through careful shot choices. He has been married multiple times to various actresses: Mimi Rogers (1987-1990), Nicole Kidman (1990-2001) who played a love interest in three of his movies, and Katie Holmes (2006-2012). He is also a first cousin to actor William Mapother and has appeared in multiple films with him.
