The franchise began in 1996 and was created by Core Design. It has been adapted into a series of live action films, animation, and comics, with the first live action film having the honor of being the most financially successful live action adaptation of a game for almost two decades until Sonic the Hedgehog 2020 was released. The franchise follows the adventures of the eponymous female protagonist, Lara Croft, aristocrat turned tomb raider as she explores various monster and trap-filled tombs while fighting off various villainous factions who have their eyes on various supernatural artifacts. The series was influenced by the Indiana Jones film franchise and Indiana Jones was one of the reasons why Tomb Raider's protagonist was made a woman, to avoid being seen as too similar to the iconic hero. Lara herself became one of the most iconic action heroines and female sex symbols in video games, helping pave the way for more games starring action-oriented heroines. Lara herself has also made non-canon cameos in other games. Thanks to the strong sales of the franchise, Lara was also named by Guinness World Records as the most successful human video game heroine. The gameplay of her games has also influenced many subsequent 3d action/adventure games. The video games are divided into three continuities: the original Core Design continuity, the first Crystal Dynamics reboot, and the second darker and grittier Crystal Dynamics reboot. While Lara is the protagonist in all of them and they all share the premise of Lara exploring various tombs and fighting off villainous factions, each continuity has a different tone, gameplay style and storyline.
