He is notably of mixed ethnicity, to the point that he considers himself to be a person of color. His mother has English, German, and Scottish roots while his biological father, whom he never met, would have not been allowed to be with his mother due to anti-miscegenation laws. Diesel was also raised by an African American adoptive father. He began acting at a young age, first appearing in the children's play, Dinosaur's Door, and studied both acting and writing as he grew up. He was not a big name for the first decade of his career, so he made ends meet by working as a bouncer and a telemarketer. Diesel was first noticed by famed director Steven Spielberg when he saw Diesel's short film, Multi-Facial, based off of his own struggles as a young mixed-race actor trying to find work. Spielberg cast Diesel in Saving Private Ryan, Diesel's first big budget film role. Diesel became a major film star a few years later when he starred as Riddick in Pitch Black and Dominic Toretto in The Fast and The Furious. Both roles became Diesel's signature roles and turned him into a popular action film actor. He frequently plays tough and rebellious heroes who often operate outside of the law, but still have compassion buried underneath their rough exterior. Besides his physique, Diesel is known for his deep, gravelly voice, which has also helped him land major voice acting roles. Outside of acting, he is known for being a major fan of Dungeons and Dragons. He is notably close to two of his fellow Fast and the Furious costars, Michelle Rodriguez, whom he dated briefly, and Paul Walker, who became his best friend. Diesel honored Walker after his passing by naming his third child, Pauline, after him. Diesel has been married to model Paloma Jimenez since 2007.
