Iconic and long-running American superhero franchise and the biggest franchise in the DC Comics Universe besides Superman. Batman debuted in 1939 in Issue 27 of Detective Comics. The character proved popular enough to get his own self-titled series in 1940. Batman and the series were created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Although the former used to receive sole credit, it eventually came to light that Finger was responsible for much of the franchise's defining elements leading to both of them receiving credit. Due to the long running nature of the series, the series and the portrayal of its characters vary depending on the writer and artist with some installments of the series being lighthearted and over the top like the 1960s Batman TV series while others are gritty and film noir-esque like the comic The Dark Knight Returns. The same applies for the numerous movie and video game adaptations. The series is set in the crime infested city of Gotham. Criminals and corruption run rampant throughout the city and the few honest police officers like Jim Gordon are often powerless to deal with the staggering amount of crime. However, a mysterious vigilante who roams the night gradually emerges. He wears a cape with a bat like cowl, is a master of stealth and hand to hand combat, and is armed with a carefully prepared variety of gadgets and vehicles. He strikes terror in the hearts of many criminals and proves to be the best force against crime and corruption. Gordon forms an alliance with this mysterious man, known as Batman, and meets with him secretly. Although Gordon knows little about this man, he grows to trust him. Unbeknownst to everyone except for his butler Alfred Pennyworth and his sidekicks in his later years, Batman is actually the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne. In public, Bruce acts like a playboy with little knowledge of the outside world, but at night, he becomes Batman and tirelessly fights crime. He became motivated to become a crime fighter after witnessing his parents' murder. He underwent rigorous physical and mental training to develop the skills necessary to fight criminals and uses his wealth to create the numerous gadgets and vehicles he has. Batman himself has no superpowers, however, he makes up for this with his cleverness and is able to take on opponents who wield far more power than he does. The series and its characters have had a large impact on international pop culture, including anime/manga. Katsura Masakazu, the character designer of Tiger & Bunny, is noted to be a large fan of Batman and various story elements of said series resemble those in Batman. The anime series The Big O and its protagonist Roger Smith are also inspired by Batman, particularly the 1992 Batman Animated Series. The Batman franchise itself is heavily inspired by the swashbuckling adventure series Zorro, which is acknowledged in some of the comics where Bruce is shown to have watched Zorro as a kid. Quite a few of Batman's recurring characters have become iconic and influential in their own right. The most iconic villain of the series The Joker is also one of the most well known villainous clown characters and the Final Fantasy VI villain Kefka is noted to bear a strong resemblance to him. Femme fatale/love interest Catwoman/Selina Kyle is also the main inspiration for the character Zola from Battle Arena Toshinden. Batman is notably frequently featured alongside Superman in many comic stories and adaptations, even outside of Justice League.
