Now Viewing: chainsawTag type: General Powered tool for sawing and cutting. Most commonly a handheld tool which uses a combustion engine to drive a chain along what's called a bar, the chain holding a set of teeth which do the cutting as the chain cycles rapidly. Typically used by lumberjacks for felling trees, but there are many different kinds of chainsaws for many different kinds of purposes. Even normal ones for cutting wood may have their set of teeth changed out for different kinds, and there are different sizes of bars, as well as small chainsaws fitted on the end of poles, fittingly referred to as polesaws, which are typically used for trimming tree branches from the ground. Though most commonly driven by combustion engines, electric chainsaws exist, using either battery packs, or a cable plugged into a power source. On the more exotic end, there are special underwater chainsaws which are pneumatically powered. Common features of chainsaws include a front guard, to bump against your arm and prevent the running saw from hitting you if it recoils, and so called felling spikes or bumping spikes, which one would use when felling a tree to try to push the tree to fall in a desired direction (if for instance the tree is next to a house, you would probably not want the tree to fall onto it). Due to the very grisly kind of wounds which chainsaws are capable of (through either workplace accidents, or murder), there exist an image in the public conscious and pop culture of chainsaws as weapons, largely inspired by horror movies, most famously The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), where the villainous Leatherface uses it to brutally maim and kill. In this capacity, it can either be normal chainsaws used as improvised weapons, or a weaponized form of the concept of the chainsaw. In reality, there are certain practical limitations to using a chainsaw as a weapon, and the incredible loudness of the engine is usually glossed over, hearing protection is rarely depicted in these cases.
