Now Viewing: death_noteTag type: Copyright Popular suspense thriller manga written by Ohba Tsugumi and drawn by Obata_Takeshi. It may or may not be the first manga for the former who has not disclosed his true identity. There are theories that Ohba is an established mangaka who for whatever reason is going by a different name, but Ohba's true identity remains a mystery. In any case, this is the first manga where Ohba was credited and Ohba and Obata would reunite for the manga Bakuman. The manga debuted on December 2003 and ended on May 2006. It has been adapted into an anime by Madhouse Studios, several live action films, a live action TV series, and has received a novel spinoffs. The anime aired from October 3, 2006 to June 26, 2007. The anime is directed by Araki Tetsuro and written by Inoue Toshiki. The characters are designed by Kitao_Masaru. While many of the core plot points and character traits are the same in all versions of the story, each version of the story notably has a slightly different outcome and interpretation of the series' characters. It tells the story of Yagami Light, a genius teen who discovers a notebook left behind by the shinigami Ryuk. Intrigued by the notebook, titled Death Note, he brings it home with him and learns that the book will kill any human whose name is written on it. He decides to become a vigilante and create what he believes to be a more just world with the book by using it to wipe out criminals. The mysterious serial killer of criminals is soon known as Kira to the general public although no one knows that Light is Kira. Unfortunately for Light, his activities catch the attention of the eccentric genius detective L who correctly deduces that Kira is in Japan, jump starting an escalating battle of wits between the two geniuses. This dark thriller is famous for its numerous plot twists as a result of the battle of wits between Light and L. Due to the plot twist heavy nature of the story, people who wish to be unspoiled should be wary of looking up further information on the series. The anime adaptation directed by Araki Tetsuo and animated by Madhouse is famous for its highly dramatic and stylized presentation of the story making the story more theatrical inspiring popular memes like "Just as planned" and "I'll take a potato chip and--EAT IT!" as well as homages/parodies by subsequent anime/manga. The anime also had two different composers working on the soundtrack: Hirano Yoshihisa and Taniuchi Hideki. The former provided most of the orchestral and choir pieces while the latter provided the more rock oriented songs and also composed L's Theme. The series is notorious for being accused of inspiring copycat crimes and imitations with real life people creating their own 'Death Notes.' However, the people who owned such notes did not kill anyone though they still got in trouble for having them. On September 28, 2007, notes with quotes from the series were discovered next to the body of a Caucasian male in Belgium. The killers were brought to justice but the murder was deemed to not be a copycat murder by the court as it was very different from any of the many deaths in the series. Despite these controversies, the series remains popular. It also had a one shot prototype that was considerably more light-hearted than the final manga.
