This page will describe how to upload from Twitter, in addition to how to handle new artist entries in the case an entry doesn't already exist for the artist you're uploading a work from.

Word of caution

Because Twitter resamples all PNG images larger than 900x900 uploaded to the service, uploading from Twitter is usually a bad idea if the artists posts their PNGs elsewhere. If the images you find on Twitter are compressed, look for higher-quality versions of images on other sites such as Pixiv (help:image source).

As of December 11th 2019, most JPG images under 10MB aren't compressed at all:

JPG images posted before this date will still be compressed, however.

Uploading

1. Twitter has resampled versions of its images known as twitter_samples, none of which should be uploaded here. In order to obtain the highest-resolution images from Twitter you must add ".jpg:orig" (or ".png:orig") to the end of the image URL, as seen below:

When sourcing from Twitter it is best to add the HTML URL to both the Tweet and the highest-resolution image. However, it's important to note that the HTML URL to the tweet is much more valuable than that of the direct image URL to the tweet for various reasons. Artist information and commentary, for example, are readily available to pull from the image source if the tweet has not been taken down yet.

2. If you are sure there is no artist tag for the artist yet, you may refer to the rest of this article on how to choose an artist name and make an entry for them, or correct their artist entry if they have changed their Twitter handle.

3. Remember to tag the rest of your upload and follow the rest of the procedures under howto:tag and howto:upload.

Artist naming

Rule of thumb is: Make a simple, readable, and memorizable tag.

The first choice is to use the artist's real name if you can find it on any websites or blogs listed on their twitter profile. See howto:artist for advice on finding the artist's name on their website.

Most of the time, an artist on Twitter will also have a profile on Pixiv or Seiga. You may check there if it is available. Because Twitter allows users to change either their username or handle with little restriction, this is more often than not a better choice. Please refer to their howto pages when doing so: howto:pixiv howto:seiga

But in the case they post only to Twitter, you may go ahead and use whatever name they have available under their twitter account.

Once you have a name, see howto:romanize to romanize it. Name kanji often have several different readings, so it's best to use any available indicators (such as the Twitter handle itself) on how to read the name.

Note that Twitter usernames are not necessarily unique. If it is too generic ("Ken", "Daisuke", "Youko", etc.), add a qualifier to make it unique. Good choices for qualifiers include:

The artist's circle name
e.g. gurande_(g-size)
The twitter handle itself
e.g. oyamada_(pi0v0jg)

Things to note

Do not use non-ASCII characters for the artist's name, even if they look like ASCII letters--Ryu is not the same as Ryu. Save that for the "Other names" field.
Do not use "_(twitter)" or "_(artist)" as the qualifier. There are probably a dozen Twitter artists named Sakura or Miki, so those qualifiers are simply not effective.
Try not to make a hard to read name like ken_(oooxvbgj).

Artist entries

To create or edit an artist entry, click the '?' next to the artist tag in the tag list. In the artist entry, add:

Other Names
The artist's Twitter username.
Any other account names or nicknames on other sites the artist lists in their profile.

The Twitter profile URL: twitter.com/GK0322
You may replace the old Twitter handle if the artist has changed it on Twitter.
URLs of any other websites the artist lists in their twitter profile.
