Now Viewing: Monkey_PunchTag type: Artist モンキー・パンチ A male mangaka whose real name is Katou Kazuhiko (加藤一彦). He was born in Hamanaka, Hokkaido on May 26, 1937. He began drawing at a young age, and produced manga for his junior high school newspaper. He started his professional career under the name 加東一彦, pronounced the same as his real name but with slightly different kanji, and made his debut with the 1965 manga Playboy School, where he was credited as Gamuta Eiji. His editor suggested that he change his pen name to Monkey Punch, a name that he didn't really like but accepted both because his boss suggested it and because he figured his next manga would be a short-lived one. Said next manga ended up being his most iconic creation, 1967's Lupin_III, and its massive success and pop cultural longevity led to the pen name sticking. As an artist, he was heavily influenced by Mad magazine, particularly the work of Mort Drucker and Sergio Aragones. Monkey Punch's younger brother is Katou Teruhiko, who worked as his assistant on Lupin III. He passed away from pneumonia on April 11, 2019, after a prolific career spanning five decades.
