It is a post-apocalyptic tokusatsu action manga created by Yamaguchi_Takayuki in his major breakthrough. It ran from July 1994 to August 1996. It was published in Weekly Shounen Champion. While it is tonally and thematically similar to many shonen action manga and works like Kamen Rider, it is notable for being exceptionally violent, with the protagonist battling grotesquely sexual enemies in very gory battles. It was adapted into a short-lived anime OVA that ran from October 23, 1996 to December 18, 1996, covering a small portion of the overall story. The anime was directed by Hirano Toshiki. It was written by Sakai Akiyoshi. The soundtrack was composed by Kudou Takashi. It was also adapted into a Playstation 1 fighting game. Yamaguchi followed up on the manga with a reboot titled Exoskull Zero. The story is set in 21st century Japan, whose society has completely collapsed as a result of a massive earthquake. In the midst of Japan's ruins, people try to maintain some semblance of their past pre-apocalypse lives like going to school and living in apartments. However, the populace are now terrorized by super-powered monsters who ruthlessly kill off any unlucky human to cross their path. Gruesome deaths have become a part of humanity's daily life. Humanity's greatest hope lies in Kakugo, a teen boy who is armed with formidable martial arts skills and a special exoskeleton that enhances his abilities. He is the new transfer student to Reverse Cross High School, where he begins his mission to protect humanity from the monsters and find out who's responsible for the threat. As he fights through them, he gradually realizes that humanity's greatest threat is actually someone close to him. . . The series is notably highly polarizing in terms of reception. In Japan, the manga was fairly successful and was even considered as a finalist for the 1997 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. However, western anime reviewers frequently give the series, particularly the more widely available anime adaptation, negative reviews.
