It is a lighthearted multimedia idol franchise produced by Sunrise_(company) and created by Sakurako Kimiko. The franchise started with the idol group μ's, the star of Love_Live_School_Idol_Festival. It originated in Dengeki G Magazine in its August 2010 issue, following a short announcement of the project in July 2010. The issue laid out the characters and its story, written by Sakurako. The same month saw the premiere of the first music video/single Bokura no LIVE Kimi to no LIFE. After this issue, popularity polls were posted, allowing fans for vote for their preferred character, and the results influenced subsequent entries in the franchise. Love Live! was not a major success upon debut, but its popularity steadily grew until it became one of the prominent idol franchises of the 2010s. The franchise is set in a universe where high schools have their own idol singers that represent them, called school idols. School idol groups are often formed via clubs filled with similarly passionate female students, and the most successful ones can practically become celebrities. The eponymous Love Live! is a competition between these school idol groups and winning the competition earns prestige both for the idols and their school. The franchise's casts are entirely female and male characters are virtually nonexistent with even background extras being almost always female. Each installment is stand alone, with only a few hints that each incarnation is set in the same universe as the previous one. But much like fellow Sunrise series Gundam, it has many recurring archetypes, themes, and plot elements. Each entry frames its protagonists as underdog up and comers to school idols who try to revitalize their school's school idol club, and the school itself. The franchise frequently casts seiyuu who are also up and comers as the main idols while the supporting cast will often be played by popular veteran seiyuu. One of the main characters will be someone who tries to show off, but comically ends up not being taken seriously by the others, and there will usually be at least one member with non-Japanese blood, with said member often dropping phrases from their native language via dialogue or in their songs. Besides the idol performances, each entry focuses heavily on the close friendships that form between the idols, with some relationships bordering on seeming romantic in nature. Due to the multimedia nature of the franchise, the characterization of the cast may differ between each incarnation. While the characters are mostly consistent in appearance and various distinguishing personality quirks, the reasons behind these quirks and their role in the overall plot may vary drastically. The animation makes use of both 2d animation and 3d, with the latter being used for the idol performances in the anime series.
