The reason for this, given before the game was released, was because the developers wanted to have all the Playstation games be numbered while games on other consoles would be given a subtitle. It is directed by Kato Hiroki and produced by Mikami Shinji. The story was written by Sugimura Noboru, Soda Hirohisa, Miyashita Junichi, Asaka Akira, Ishizeki Hideyuki, and Suzuki Yasuyuki. It was released on the Dreamcast in 2000 and the Playstation 2 and Gamecube received a rerelease called Code Veronica X which included extra cutscenes. It was adapted into a novel by S.D. Perry in 2001. It has also been adapted into a manhua by Lee Chung Hing. The game was also adapted into a light gun shooter game called Resident Evil Survivor 2 - Code: Veronica. Unlike Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, the game is a direct sequel to Resident Evil 2. It has been three months since Claire Redfield escaped from Raccoon City and she has still not found her brother Chris. She continues her search in Paris where she proceeds to single-handedly raid an Umbrella facility. She is captured and taken to Rockfort Prison Island, but she is soon released after zombies overrun the island. She meets fellow prisoner and troubled teenager Steve Burnside and the two of them team up to survive the zombie outbreak and escape from the island. Unfortunately, the psychotic Alfred Ashford and the supposedly deceased Alexia Ashford conspire to hinder their escape. As Claire and Steve fight to escape, they uncover the dark secrets of the Ashford family and their involvement with the T-Veronica virus. The game allows characters to use two guns simultaneously and Steve Burnside is shown fighting with this style during cutscenes. The game's release was preceded by the faux-documentary Wesker's Report, which was intended to celebrate the franchise's fifth anniversary, recap the franchise's story, set up Code Veronica's story as well as Wesker's role in it, and bring back Albert Wesker, who had been absent since the original game, into the main narrative. The game's story is retold in The Darkside Chronicles. However, the retelling makes some notable changes in the narrative and some characterization making the canon status of the retelling debatable. The game received generally positive reviews and sold 3.7 million copies worldwide.
