Illustrated by seven ukiyo-e artists, including Utagawa Kunisada [2]. Kawatake Mokuami [3] wrote a kabuki drama based on the first ten parts of the novel. Although the toad-riding thief Jiraiya first appeared in Kan'wa-tei Onitake's Jiraiya Monogatari, Mizugaki's Gouketsu Monogatari is regarded as a great popularizer of Jiraiya's name. His archnemesis, Orochimaru, and his wife, Tsunade, originated from this series. Characters: Jiraiya, aka. Ogata_Shuuma_Hiroyuki Tsunade_(Jiraiya_Gouketsu_Monogatari), aka. Ogata Tsunade Orochimaru_(Jiraiya_Gouketsu_Monogatari) Naruto - Some characters' names and one of the episode titles [4] originated from the novel.
