Iconic and influential 1995 mecha series directed by Anno_Hideaki and animated by Gainax. The character designs were done by Sadamoto_Yoshiyuki. Music was composed by Sagisu Shiro and and the mechs were designed by Anno Hideaki and Yamashita Ikuto. Evangelion, and especially the conclusion film to the original series End of Evangelion, is Anno Hideaki's darkest work as a director. The series was also influenced by Anno's real life struggles with depression, which he fell into after he finished his previous Fushigi no Umi no Nadia. It is notable for incorporating psychological character analysis in conjunction with the action generally expected of a mecha series; its cast of characters are all deeply flawed and affection-starved people and their internal conflicts are given equal weight as the story' external conflict. The Evas are taller than skyscrapers and have beast like designs and movements and are partially organic even though they are mecha. The animal like quality of the mechs makes battles against the monstrous Angels reminiscent of giant monster battles. The organic quality of the combatants also leads to the mecha battles being much bloodier, especially in the movies, than most mecha series. The series is also known for using quite a bit of musical dissonance. Many of the darkest scenes in the series are set to music that sounds deceptively upbeat and cheerful to create a jarring effect and increase the horror of the onscreen events. The musical dissonance also extends to the ending theme of the series, which is a calm cover of "Fly Me to the Moon" performed by the female seiyuu of the series. It also popularized the emotionless girl archetype in anime with Ayanami Rei and features numerous religious references in its story. Due to the extensive symbolism and the inclusion of cryptic scenes and dialogue, the series is subject to a wide variety of interpretations.

The series also has a manga written and drawn by Sadamoto, which ran from February 1995 to June 2013. Although the anime was developed first, the manga ended up premiering first due to the creators planning to use the manga to get readers interested in the upcoming anime and because the anime itself suffered production delays. Even though the manga started before the anime premiered, the manga itself had a slow release schedule. By the time the manga was completed, three of the Rebuild of Evangelion films, which also suffered production delays like the original series, had already premiered in theaters. The manga has quite a few notable differences in plot and characterization from the more well known anime.

It is set in a futuristic Japan. A devastating world event known as the Second Impact has wiped out a good chunk of humanity. The majority of the story takes place in the civilian city of Tokyo-3, which has the ability to shift its buildings underground. Lonely and insecure fourteen year old Ikari Shinji is suddenly called by his estranged father Ikari Gendo to come to the city. When Shinji arrives, he learns that his father has called him to be a pilot for the mecha EVA-01 and battle mysterious aliens known as Angels, which have been attacking Earth. The EVAs are the only things that can stop the Angels. Shinji has no combat experience and is reluctant to participate in such life or death battles but he is dragged into being one of the defenders of humanity alongside the mysterious stoic girl Ayanami Rei, which does not help his personal issues.

However, the conflict between humanity and the Angels is less clear cut than it seems, and on top of this external battle, Shinji and his fellow coworkers are forced to grapple with their personal issues at the same time.

The music for the series has also received recognition, composer Sagisu Shiro won the 1997 Kobe Animation Award for best music and the third soundtrack CD for the series reached the top of the Oricon Charts for highest sales in 1997. The opening theme for the series, Takahashi Yoko's Cruel Angel Thesis, has also won JASRAC's annual award for the enormous amount of royalties its gained from how often the song is used in places outside of the original series like pachislots and karaoke.

While the series was ultimately highly successful and influential, its production was a notably troubled one. The budget for the series began running low towards the end which forced the staff to find ways to work around it and also contributed to the abstract nature of the series finale. The finale is famous for giving the Gainax the reputation of ending their anime with bizarre and controversial endings. The Director's Cut DVD release of the series adds new scenes and more detailed animation, but the finale is kept the same. The original TV series was followed by a recap movie called Death and Rebirth and a conclusion film called The End of Evangelion that, depending on viewer interpretation, offers an alternate ending to the series or complements the original abstract ending.

It has also appeared in Super Robot Wars. Originally, Gainax executives were concerned that having the Evas depicted in the small sprites the Super Robot Wars games use would harm the mech's image, but series creator Anno Hideaki strongly insisted on Evangelion's inclusion and thus the Evangelion series was licensed and its cast appears along with their mechs.

Gainax would revisit the series with the Rebuild of Evangelion films which starts off as a remake of the series before going off in a very different direction story-wise.
