It focuses on the Belmont family of vampire hunters and their associates in their battles against Dracula throughout numerous centuries. Dracula and his castle are consistently revived forcing the Belmont family and in some games, other characters to do battle with the persistent vampire and his horror movie inspired minions. The games are predominantly in 2D. Before Symphony of the Night, the games were mostly extremely difficult 2D platformers. Symphony of the Night changed the gameplay style of the series and most games after it emphasized exploration and included RPG elements. The games, except for Order of Ecclesia, were also considerably easier. Nevertheless, Symphony of the Night is the most well known entry in the franchise.
