He joins Ichijou Hikaru and forms a team with him along with Kakizaki Hayao. Although he is young and relatively inexperienced, he reveals himself to be an outstanding pilot and possibly the best human combatant in the series. He also falls in love with the female Zentraedi Milia who is also a skilled combatant and becomes fascinated with Max after the two engaged in a battle where he proved to be a greater threat than any other human she has faced or heard of. He is also one of the few Macross characters to appear in more than one Macross series. He also appears in Macross_7. Although said series takes place decades after the original Macross, Max does not seem to have aged much at all.
