Years after the original TV series' release, creator Anno_Hideaki decided to revisit his most iconic franchise and began planning the series in Fall 2002. As part of his preparation for this series, he watched the original TV series back to back. Anno envisioned this four part film series as a way to recreate the Eva series without being constrained by the budget and technological limitations the production of the original series suffered. The films uses more computer effects than the original series did and are intended to be a stand-alone work that veteran EVA fans and newcomers can enjoy equally. However, Anno didn't make the film with his old studio Gainax, but instead decided to make the films with the new studio he founded in 2006, Studio_Khara. The film reunites the cast and crew from the original series, but this time Tsurumaki Kazuya, Masayuki, Maeda Mahiro, and Nakayama Katsuichi assisted Anno with directorial duties. Sagisu Shiro's soundtracks for the films add new songs with English chanting and remixes of his original soundtrack for the TV series. Sagisu has also remixed songs from other Gainax anime soundtracks he worked on like Kare Kano and Fushigi no Umi no Nadia and included them in these films.
The first film was released in 2007 and is a close remake of the first six episodes of the TV series with movie level animation, but starting with the second movie, the story goes in a completely new direction from the TV series so be wary of spoilers if you haven't seen the movies.
The film series is also notorious for being frequently delayed. Every entry of the film has had its original release date pushed back at least once.
