What's the consensus on translating sound effects, mandatory or at your own discretion? Would rather not slap big boxes over what basically amounts to "loud sex noises".

That’s usually let up to the person doing the translations when it comes to that. Personal I feel that even sound effects should be translated if you could. If your worried about the size of the box you could always make the box smaller over the sound effect.

hm, i tried deleting the translation_request tag and adding check_translation and translated as tags but translation_request came back. Am I doing something wrong? And if check_translation depends on translation_request, should I still keep adding the translated tag? I could just skip the check_translation as well, mostly going for low hanging fruit that shouldn't need double checking.

"check_translation" implies "translation_request". You cannot remove "translation_request" without also removing "check_translation". A request for a translation check is still a translation request.
You should still add "translated" or "partially_translated" as applicable even if the translation needs to be checked.
