Hard_translated or english_text...?
Posted on: 02/16/21 07:06PM

Why does hard_translated exist? Wouldn't it be english_text? or is hard_translated for posts that were originally in Japanese but were translated into english but if that was the case why not just add a translation onto the post seems like a unnecessary tag to me

hard translation refers to very direct translations either through notes or by editing the image to be in english.
as an example, in german, "die radieschen von unten anschauen" really means "to push up daisies". if you hard translate it, it's "to see the radishes from below".

Wiki has said otherwise for seven years. What you're describing is a literal translation.

Seems to me the wiki doesn't match up with what people typically call things often. It more or less just describes tags we get from danbooru.

Hard_translation = Japanese text has been edited in the image to be English text.

english_text = It is not an edit, it was English to begin with.

Edit: english_text = there is English text in the image.

So is there no unifying tag for english text in a post? The "english" tag (currently deprecated) could work well for this.

Also, the wiki entry for "english_text" should probably be update to reflect this as it currently just says "Posts that contain text written correctly in English."

Danbooru seems mixed on this. I'd say the two tags are not mutually exclusive since we may have some posts hard translated to languages other than English.
