The original game treats Elena like a joke for its entire length... until the final Turk battle where she's more dangerous than Reno and Rude because she spams items like crazy. In low-level or no Materia runs she can really wreck your shit.

That is the joke... the Turks are Shinra's elite, even SOLDIER answers to them. Even if she was added to the group as an injury replacement for Reno, you don't get into the Turks unless you're the best of the best. Because you haven't fought her the entire game you don't know what to expect and she doesn't fight anything like how Reno and Rude fight.

In a way she's a lot like Cloud; he washed out of SOLDIER because he was strong enough but he didn't have a strong enough mind. Elena constantly causes trouble for Shinra not because she's constantly getting pwned by your team like Reno and Rude do, but because she can't keep her mouth shut.

The real joke is that we never got to fight Tseng and he was probably the biggest A-hole in the group.
