Originally a fantasy romance drama/comedy visual novel developed by Key_(Company) and released on April 28, 2004. It has been adapted into anime twice, a movie from Toei animation, and 2 TV series + OVAs by Kyoto Animation as well as a few manga adaptations. It is also the first Key visual novel to have no sex scenes and the first to receive a direct sequel/spinoff titled Tomoyo After. Not to be confused with the Irish band of the same name. Like Air and Kanon, the Kyoto Animation adaptation is directed by Ishihara Tatsuya, written by Shimo Fumihiko and has character designs by Ikeda_Kazumi. The Toei animation adaptation, which roughly covers Nagisa's arc in CLANNAD and After Story, was once again directed by veteran anime director Dezaki Osamu who previously directed the Toei version of Air. The film was released on September 15, 2007. It was also notably Dezaki's final work before his passing in April 2011. The title was chosen because main writer Maeda Jun thought the word was the Irish word for family/clan which is what the storyline revolves around.

It tells the story of Okazaki Tomoya, a delinquent teen boy dissatisfied with his life and estranged from his father, who meets Furukawa Nagisa one day while going to school. He takes an interest in the shy girl and notices that she's often alone as her friends have already graduated and she has been held back from graduating because of her frail body, which makes her miss many classes. As he interacts with her, he learns that she wants to reestablish the drama club and has created a play that she would like to perform. He agrees to help her do this. As he helps gather members and friends, the formerly apathetic young man ends up making a major difference on others' lives and finds himself changing too, opening up more and more to others, particularly Nagisa.

The visual novel is the third and final work in the 'seasonal' Key trilogy of Kanon, Air, and CLANNAD. The experience of creating Air weighed heavily on the creators of CLANNAD as throughout development they were concerned about CLANNAD being perceived as being too similar to Air. Maeda noted that he wanted CLANNAD to be distinct from Air. He wanted CLANNAD to be a story that examines the relationship between people and the town they live in. He felt that although he was able to tell the story he wanted with Air, many readers of Air found it difficult to receive, so he felt that CLANNAD should be a work that will be easier for the audience to receive. Maeda was also concerned that the final arc After Story could potentially overshadow the rest of the story which is what he felt Air ultimately suffered from, so he put in a lot of effort for the earlier portions of the story. He felt that he pushed himself beyond his limits when writing CLANNAD, describing it as a "wall that he will never be able to get over again." The novel's enormous length was not part of the original plan and the developers never expected the story to expand to the point that it was twice as long as the original plan. One of the main writers of the visual novel Suzumoto Yuichi attributed this radical increase in length due to the lengthening structure of the game's base scenario which had the side effect of causing even more branch stories to form.

The visual novel also has a lengthy special finale arc titled After Story (which the 2nd season of the anime covers) that is unlocked after all the others are completed, which greatly shifts the focus of the story and is one of the more well known arcs of the series. The TV series, which consists of two seasons plus a few DVD extra episodes covers most of the arcs, but notably leaves out a few and makes a few changes to some of them. The first season ran from October 4, 2007-March 27, 2008. The second season ran from October 3, 2008-March 26, 2009.

Like its predecessors, the visual novel was highly successful. The original Windows release sold 100,560 copies within 2004. By April 18, 2011, the console releases sold over 113,000 copies and the PSP release sold 28,984 copies by the end of 2010.

The visual novel has been homaged by other works. Between March 26 and June 26, 2008, the MMORPG games Hiten Online and Holy Beast Online gave the players the opportunity to have their characters dress up as the CLANNAD characters and win special CLANNAD related goods. The visual novel Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu: Cosplay Hajimeshita allowed the players to have the Nogizaka Haruka girls cosplay as the CLANNAD characters.
