Not to be confused with the Japanese Showa era film King Kong vs Godzilla although this film is inspired by that film. It is a 2021 Kaijuu action movie directed by Adam Wingard, who had previously directed the American adaptation of another Japanese-based property, Death Note, and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein. The soundtrack was composed by Tom Holkenborg (JunkieXL). The film stars Millie Bobby Brown, Alexander Skarsgaard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and newcomer deaf actress Kaylee Hottle, as its main human characters. It was released on March 24, 2021. Like the previous Monsterverse films, the Kaijuu are all depicted with CGI with movements and expressions modeled after mocap actors. The film is set five years after its predecessor Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and returns its focus to King Kong. Kong is still living on Skull Island, protecting the Iwi. However, the island is not what it once was. Kong is kept within a massive dome that mimics Skull Island's environment as a study subject and as protection from the violent storms ravaging the island. This upsets Kong who's only placated by his friendship with the last Iwi native, Jia. The rest of the world is faced with another Titan problem, this time in the form of Godzilla himself, who has uncharacteristically begun attacking human civilizations. Madison Russell believes that there must be a reason behind Godzilla's attacks, and she works with conspiracy theorist Bernie Hayes to investigate Apex Enterprises, which may have something to do with Godzilla's attacks. Apex's CEO, Walter Simmons, enlists theorist Nathan Lind, who had previously done research on Hollow Earth, a special environment housed underneath the Earth, that is said to contain vast amounts of energy as well as provide territory for the Titans to thrive. To reach Hollow Earth, Lind and APEX need the help of King Kong himself, and he is brought out of Skull Island to help them on their mission with the promise that Kong will find a new, true home. However, this action puts them in the middle of Godzilla's newfound warpath. . . This film was one of the many major blockbusters to be affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic, forcing the movie to be delayed and eventually released simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max. In spite of this, the film was the first major blockbuster success post pandemic, grossing 285.8 million dollars internationally within two weeks.
