He is known for producing work in a wide variety of fields, but he is most known for his comedy and film work. His famous works include being the host of the game show, Takeshi's Castle, and his numerous crime dramas such as Hana-bi and the Outrage franchise. He was the youngest of his working class family and the son of a man who may have been a yakuza. He started his professional career as a stand up comedian in 1972 and formed a popular comedy duo with his friend Kiyoshi Kaneko. The two of them went by Beat Takeshi and Beat Kiyoshi and they became the Two Beats with their acts becoming known for pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable for manzai comedy. The two of them later went their separate ways and Kitano continued working as a solo comedian. Starting in the 1980s, Kitano decided to try his hand at acting in and directing films, but in spite of his background in comedy, he mostly made serious dramas, starting with the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence in 1983. His fame as a comedian initially worked against him in Japan as audiences would reportedly start laughing once he appeared on screen, but he continued appearing and making dramatic films. His early dramatic work was more readily accepted at international film festivals since many of the viewers there were seeing him for the first time and weren't aware of his comedy work. As an actor, he often plays tough and stoic characters who, in spite of their general calm demeanor, can suddenly explode into committing acts of brutal violence. His crime dramas often move at a slow-burn pace and have a contemplative tone which is periodically and suddenly interrupted by quick outbursts of bloodshed. He frequently works with composer Hisaishi Joe. He has also dabbled in video games, making the infamously difficult 1986 game Takeshi no Chousenjou, and having a supporting role in Ryuu no Gotoku 6..
