Now Viewing: makizushiTag type: General 巻き寿司 (Makizushi) or 海苔巻き (Nori-maki) A kind of sushi, usually rolled in nori (seaweed) sheets. A thick roll is called 太巻き (Futo-maki) and a thin roll is called 細巻き (Hoso-maki) . For Pixiv/danbooru users, makizushi are well-known for the Ehou-maki custom. Ehou-maki (恵方巻き, lit. "Lucky Makizushi") refers to the custom in the Kansai region of eating a futo-maki on the evening of Setsubun while facing "Ehou" (the lucky direction that changes according to the year) or to the makizushi itself. Much like Valentine's Day chocolate, it is almost a man-made custom spread by promotional activities of concerned bodies for reasons purely related to profit and sales. In the 1970s, it spread through the Kansai region thanks to nori (seaweed) distributors/wholesalers and sushi shops, and in the 2000s, it has spread throughout Japan thanks to the convenience store industry. In other words, this custom is very new to places outside of Kansai. That is why Pixiv is filled with sexually suggestive images on February 3.
